Robber sentenced to 24 years may do less time in prison
A man doing 24 years in prison now may do less time. Cedric Parker dragged an 80-year-old woman into a shootout, using her as a shield, but he just won an appeal for a new sentence.
In 2011 Parker and a teen robbed a Family Dollar and were cornered by police. When officers surrounded the store, Parker noticed an elderly woman nearby and grabbed her as he continued his standoff.
In surveillance video, the woman can be seen walking with a cane, then being yanked and dragged by Parker, sending her cane flying and her right into the line of fire.
Judge John Sutula's sentence of 24 years was said to have been incorrect due to him compounded charges and not fully explaining the reason behind Parker's sentence. So now Parker will have a new hearing for a new sentence.
It's unknown just how much of a reduction he may receive. After the initial sentencing, the victim told 19 Action News Reporter Ed Gallek that she was glad Parker was going away to prison but now the question is "For how long?"
