Oregon man: I found 2 $100 bills in Walmart cookies

Posted: Updated:

An ordinary trip to the grocery store turned out to be anything but for a Salem man who said he bought a box of snickerdoodle cookies from a Walmart store on Saturday.

Phil — who asked that we only use his first name — brought the cookies home to enjoy the sweet treat.

"When I opened it up, a $100 bill popped out," he said.

At first, Phil thought it was a joke or some sort of promotional ploy.

But upon further inspection, the Benjamin seemed too real.

He decided to go back to the store to check out the other boxes of cookies.

"The remaining three boxes were still there, so I looked at the one and I looked at the other, and lo and behold, there was a second $100 bill," Phil said.

A total of $200 was tucked into two boxes of cookies.

Incredulous, Phil brought them to the customer service desk to let them know of his discovery.

They used a special marker to see if they were real, and sure enough, both bills are legit.

They let Phil keep the money.

A Walmart store manager suspects this may be the work of a Good Samaritan. This past Christmas, someone came in and paid for several families' layaway items, all anonymously.

Whoever it is, Phil says he's grateful for the generosity and has this message to the donor:

"I'm really thankful, I really appreciate it, and I hope someday I hope to be able to do what you did," he said.
