Baystate Medical Center holds annual memorial quilt exhibition

Posted: Updated:

For nearly 20 years now, Baystate Medical Center has offered a special way for parents to honor children who they have lost.

This weekend was the annual exhibition of Memorial Quilts at Baystate.

Each spring, during a special service, families are given a patch of fabric to personalize and add to the quilt of children lost over the past year.

Baystate officials said it is part of their job to help families who are grieving from the loss of a child.

"We do take care of sick people in the hospital," said Marjorie Bloom, a medical social worker for Baystate. "Unfortunately, this is part of the cycle of life. It's an honor for us really to be able to help them through this life passage."

Bloom credited retired Pediatric Surgeon Dr. Barry Sachs with the idea of the quilts.

The ones that were on display this weekend were from 1998 through this year.
