The Holyoke Police Department joined forces with ATF and FBI agents in search of weapons in neighborhoods throughout the city that they said are known for gang activity.

They conducted the sweep on Tuesday morning.

They searched for weapons hidden in public areas that police said are often used by different groups to stash illegal weapons and drugs.

It's part of the Proactive Area Weapons Search, or P.A.W.S. Program.

Tuesday's search came up with no weapons, but police did arrest four on separate charges.

The search utilized explosive detection K-9s from ATF, Massachusetts State Police, Boston PD, US Park Police, Federal Protective Service, Everett PD, Quincy PD, Milton PD, Chelsea PD, Worcester PD, Revere PD, Salem PD and Auburn PD. In addition, Holyoke Police Narcotics K-9s also assisted.

Holyoke police said although no weapons were found, they still consider the sweep a success.

"The Holyoke Police Department, ATF, FBI Gang Task Force and Massachusetts State Police are working every day to get the violent criminals and weapons off the street to make them safer," said Holyoke police Chief James Neiswanger.
