A Valley author and photographer wants to raise awareness and support for Phoenix Children's Hospital.

Roughly three years in the making, Corey Schwartz, along with a team of 21 other photojournalists have documented life behind closed doors at Phoenix Children's Hospital. About 10,000 images were taken, but only 157 were included in the book.

"We have a wonderful children's hospital, one of the few in the country.  And it's something that we should be connected to, proud of, and support," said Schwartz.

Schwartz says the goal with the book is to connect present and future financial donors to the hospital. He wants people to see where their donations are going.

"About 60 percent of the children at the hospital are receiving some kind of support. We wanted to say 'thank you' to all those donors who make that support possible," added Schwartz.

The powerful photos display a wide variety of people, emotions and situations.  From the physicians and nurses, to the children and their families.  Schwartz says he felt a connection to all of the children, but 7-year old Maddie Lewis was one particular patient who captured his heart.

"She's one of the champions of the book. Multiple photographers photographed her and she was always smiling, regardless of how much pain or suffering she was going through that day," said Schwartz.

Besides being a gift for donors and supporters of the Hospital, Schwartz told CBS 5 that anyone can purchase a copy and that 100 percent of the proceeds from the book will be given to Phoenix Children's Hospital Foundation.
