Money released to Westfield State University

Posted: Updated:

Nearly $200,000 was released to Westfield State University by the Department of Higher Education Wednesday. More than $2 million had been on hold due to the ongoing investigation into questionable spending by President Evan Dobelle.

Higher Education Commissioner Richard Freeland said earlier Wednesday no money would be released. After a meeting with acting president, Dr. Elizabeth Preston, Freeland released $195,444 for two grants. Preston said she appreciates the vote of confidence and was eager to move forward with the work of educating students.

A statement by Westfield State University stated Freeland also promised funding would be released for an internship program.
