2nd Democrat jumps into race for attorney general

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (AP) - A second Democratic is announcing his candidacy for the state's top law enforcement office.

Clinton state Rep. Harold Naughton plans to release a video Thursday morning making public his run for attorney general, followed by campaign stops in Springfield, Fall River, Attleboro and Clinton.

If elected, Naughton says he'd fight gun violence and push for safer streets.

Naughton, 53, serves as chairman of the Legislature's Committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security. A lawyer, Naughton has served in the House since 1995.

Naughton's announcement comes days after Maura Healey, a 42-year-old former top deputy for Attorney General Martha Coakley, declared her candidacy for the top seat.

Coakley, now in her second term, is running for governor, leaving an open race for the office.

No Republican has announced for attorney general.
