The Old Lyme community is mourning following the loss of 95-year-old Carolina McCarthy after a large fire broke out in her apartment Saturday evening.

According to officials, McCarthy suffered severe burns to 80 percent of her body and was flown by Life Start to Hartford Hospital for treatment, where she later succumbed to her injuries.

Multiple units battled the large fire on the corner of Lyme Street and McCurdy Road in Old Lyme Saturday night which left the apartment building destroyed.

Early Sunday, fire officials told Eyewitness news the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Officials said the fire looks to be accidental in nature and seems to have originated on the first floor.
