Don Humason sworn in as state senator

Posted: Updated:

After more than a decade as a state representative, Don Humason was sworn in as a state senator on Wednesday morning.

Humason took the oath of office from Gov. Deval Patrick, in front of colleagues and family. The Westfield native said it is a moment he never expected when he first entered politics.

"I never thought about this," said Humason. "I was very content to represent the city of Westfield and focus on local issues in Western Massachusetts. The longer I was here in the building, the more I realized that it's important to have good representation for all the cities and towns of the Commonwealth. Now I have the chance to represent 11 great communities of Western Mass."

Humason takes over for Mike Knapik. The predecessor was on hand for Wednesday afternoon's formal introduction and believes Humason, who was part of his staff for five years, will handle the new job well.

"Over 25 senators are former House members," said Knapik. "So there's that excitement and everyone wishes you well. The task of representing Western Mass is such a joy and an honor for all of us, because it's such a great part of the Commonwealth. Don is going to be a powerful voice, making sure Western Mass is not forgotten."

Humason, who is now just one of four Republican state senators, will rely on his 11 years of service as a state representative. He told CBS 3 that should make for a smooth transition.

"I can't imagine coming into this building for the first time, this chamber for the first time, with all of the things that are ahead of us, without having had the experience of being here before," said Humason. "You know the rules and the protocol, but knowing a lot of issues that are important to the state. It's just been much smoother."

The new state senator will hit the ground running, as he has already been appointed to the Ways and Means Committee.
