Springfield police arrest man after early morning car burglary

Posted: Updated:

One man was arrested in Springfield early Thursday morning after allegedly breaking into a car and stealing items.

According to police, around 2:30 a.m. officers on duty responded to a call that two young males with back packs were walking through the neighborhood in East Forest Park looking into cars and checking the doors to see if they were open.

Police say when officers pulled into the neighborhood they spotted Ricardo Collazo, 18, walking with another male who is not being identified because he is a juvenile.

Police said when they approached the two, Collazo dropped a bag he was holding and both males ran through the back yards. Police said K-9 Chase then arrived on the scene and was able to assist an officer in finding Collazo hiding in the bushes on Wayside Avenue.

According to police, after a struggle, he was placed in handcuffs. Police searched the bag Collazo had previously dropped and found stolen items. Officers say one of the items was a laptop that had been left inside of an unlocked car on a driveway on Gillette Circle.

Collazo faces multiple charges including receiving stolen property, defacement of real property and unarmed burglary.

Police are warning people not to make themselves a target, reminding everyone that the holiday season is approaching and thieves prey on parking lots and city streets by peering into cars looking for unlocked doors and packages.
