FREMONT, OH (Toledo News Now) -

If you have ever been to a Buckeye game before, chances are you've heard of the Big Nut.

The Big Nut is actually 52-year-old Fremont native Jon Peters. When it comes to his passion for the Buckeyes, what you see is what you get.

"There is no other way of life. To me, this is life," Peters said.

The origin of the Big Nut goes back to 1995, when he won a contest at a local fundraiser. Since then, his persona has taken off.

"What everyone else sees coming out is his support for the team," said his wife Terese.

What they don't see, however, is what goes on behind the scenes. Every Saturday Jon and his wife go through the same routine: two hours in the makeup chair just to get his face game-ready.

"Whatever it takes to put a smile on someone's face," he said. "The face never changes. The scarlet and gray is always the half-and-half look, with the Buckeye leaf on one side, with five leaves. On the gray side would be the Block O."

"It's crazy," Terese said of their time at the games. "Sometimes we have to say to people, ‘We just want to watch the game,' because people like to get their pictures taken with him, people like to talk to him. Just standing back and watching is a lot of fun."

The Big Nut has become a celebrity himself, but he's never lost sight of what matters most.

"God, family and Buckeyes," he said. "That's the way it should be."

And that's the way it will always be for the Big Nut.
