State funding announced for former Belchertown State School

Posted: Updated:

State Sen. Gale Candaras and state Rep. Thomas Petrolati announced Thursday the state was releasing $200,000 for the former state-owned Belchertown State School.

The money allows the permitting process and the publication of a request for proposals to begin.

The school was closed in 1992 and has remained vacant since then.

Select board member Kenneth Elstein said the town authorized more than $1 million to help the cleanup of the property. He said some of the hurdles for the property are asbestos and several tunnels on the property.

Candaras said she had been working on redeveloping the property for seven years. She said there was still a lot or work that needed to be done.
