Mohegan Sun proposes new plan to gaming commission

Posted: Updated:

Mohegan Sun representatives were back in front of the Mass Gaming Commission Tuesday for their new plan to bring a casino to the state.

After voters in Palmer shot down Mohegan's proposal back in November, the gaming company teamed up with Suffolk Downs to build a casino in the Eastern Mass city of Revere.

The gaming commission voted to allow the Suffolk Downs application to move forward, but under one condition. Both the casino developers and the city of Revere must commit to holding a second election.

They have to decide within seven days whether to accept the commission's new mandate on holding a second vote.

Back on Nov. 5, residents of Revere voted in favor of bringing gambling to their city.

However, during Tuesday's meeting, commission members said this is a whole new proposal which requires a new vote.

Commissioner James McHugh said he wants to make sure the voters are informed on what the new proposal entails.

"What I've perceived to be the issue at the very center of the current debate, is the role of the voters in allowing the application to move forward," said McHugh.

If approved by the voters, Suffolk Downs would only be the landlords of the site.

Mohegan Sun would be at the controls of the casino.

The only other company given the green light to build a Boston-based casino is Wynn Resorts. They're looking to settle in the town of Everett.
