More customers come forward with storm shelter complaints

Following a Channel 4 I-Team investigation that began when a Manchester woman complained her storm shelter was leaking so badly she was afraid to go in, other former customers said they, too, have faulty shelters.

All the customers got their shelters from Morrison Tank and Vault in Morrison, TN.

The attorney for the company said in a statement that Morrison Tank and Vault provides the best storm shelters available, but the owner will completely refund the Manchester woman's money and remove her shelter.

The Channel 4 I-Team's investigation began in the summer when Anne Roberson showed us her clamshell-style shelter behind her mobile home, and how water was sloshing around the floor inside.

Roberson said she was afraid to go in the shelter because of the amount of water coming in during storms.

When asked if she suspected other customers had the same problem, Roberson said, "I think so, I just don't think they've come forward."

Once our original story aired, two former customers contacted the Channel 4 I-Team with similar concerns.

Ingrid Fidorra, from Tullahoma, said she calls her storm shelter from Morrison Tank and Vault her "Pandora's box" because of the water problems.

"I have a storm shelter that turned out to be more than defective," Fidorra said.

Another customer from Rockvale, who did not want to be identified, said she demanded the company remove her shelter because of the water problems.

"Every time it rained, the whole bottom would be completely covered in water," the customer said.

Inside Fidorra's shelter, there is visible condensation on the ceiling and water marks. In one area, the sealant has fallen off and the wall is chipping off in small sections.

Fidorra said the water comes in through the turbine, the front door and a hole in the corner.

Fidorra said she paid Morrison Tank and Vault to waterproof the inside and outside, but ended up having to apply her own water sealant.

"I think it's a defective product," Fidorra said.

The customer from Rockvale said she complained so much about the water problems in the shelter that the company came out and dug up the shelter.

"From pretty much the time they brought it out here, we had trouble with it," the customer said.

In the Rockvale case, the company put in a new shelter and the customer has had no more problems.

Roberson said she tried repeatedly to get her shelter removed and her money back. When she was unsuccessful, she called the Channel 4 I-Team.

"I know you can get the job done if anyone can," Roberson said.

Now, the company's attorney said they will remove Roberson's shelter and refund what she paid for it.

"Morrison Tank & Vault, Inc. has been in business for over three decades and is dedicated providing the highest quality storm shelters available. This company is a Warren County staple and well respected across Middle Tennessee. Annually, it manufactures and installs over 100 shelters. My client is refunding the purchase price of Ms. Roberson's shelter and restoring the property to the condition it was in prior to the installation of the storm shelter, including excavating the site with clean dirt, compacting the dirt, bringing the site up to current grade and planting fescue seed with installing straw over the top," said attorney Ryan J. Moore.

As for Fidorra, the company said it did not install that shelter, only provided the product.

"My client did not dig the hole, nor did it install the retaining wall that fronts the shelter," Moore said in a statement.

Fidorra said she doesn't know who is to blame for the shelter's problems.
