Arbors Kids brings gifts to families in need

Posted: Updated:

With Christmas just three days away, Arbors Kids in East Longmeadow teamed up with Santa Claus on Sunday to bring some holiday joy to those in need.

Santa, along with many helpers, made their way to several Springfield Housing Authority developments Sunday morning.

The Arbors Gives Back program has spent the past month collecting gifts and donations to provide a merry Christmas to 11 families in the complexes, plus 89 others at a homeless shelter.

Both organizers and recipients were emotional about the day.

"Things have been hard, so it doesn't get better than this," said Isaura Flores, whose family moved to Springfield from Puerto Rico four years ago.  The Flores family had their living room packed with gifts.

"We really were so happy," said Amy Kimball, organizer of the event through Arbors.  "Some families are going through more hardships than others, and just to see how excited the children were that Santa was there [was great]."

Organizers said the Arbors Gives Back program has been going on for more than a decade.
