Donations pour in after Henrico apartment fire

Posted: Updated:
HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -

We have an update to a devastating fire we first told you about Monday night. That apartment fire at Delmont Plaza took everything from a single mother and her four children - including Christmas gifts under the tree. After seeing this story, donations came forward. Tuesday night, generous people spent their Christmas Eve, delivering new gifts for the family.

"I'm hoping this will be a little bit of a brighter Christmas," said Santa.

Santa and his helpers- the wonderful family who spent Christmas Eve tracking the Johnson family down- made their way to the apartment, where Samantha and her kids are staying for now.

The family welcomed Santa in, and together these new friends shared in the holiday spirit.

"I saw that thing on television last night, I'm sorry it happened, that's devastating," said Rex Wiltshire who donated gifts to the fire victims.

What aired on NBC12 Monday night were images showing the damage after a fire that began in a bathroom vent. We talked to single mother-of-four, Samantha Johnson.

"I was in shock," she said. "I got to the top of the steps and I seen... It looked like a black spider web. When I got to my room, I noticed that my entire bed was black...from I guess the soot or the smoke."

Rex and his family say they watched in horror.

"I saw the kids, and I saw her son, and it just got to me," he explained.

He's referring to Samantha's son, Kniko, who was in tears. However, Christmas Eve was a better day- thanks to this family, who went to Walmart to shop for them.

"I went and bought all kinds of gifts for her children because I can't imagine any child waking up and not having a present," Barbara Daugherty said.

And they bought a lot.

"Dolls and coloring books and Legos and Play-Doh and all the fun stuff that every kid should have," she said.

"It's Christmas. It's Christmas. Give, just give," added Rex.

Donations to the family can be facilitated through the Red Cross at 804-780-2250, or by contacting the Sixth Baptist Church at 804-359-1691.
