Tolleson police said a 47-year-old man shot and killed his two young daughters, then turned the gun on himself.
The man was identified as Alejandro Gallardo. The names of his daughters, 6 and 8 years old, were not released.
Tolleson police Sgt. Obed Gaytan told CBS 5 News that a family member called police Wednesday morning after finding the bodies.
People who live and work near 93rd Avenue and Jefferson Street said they heard screaming coming from the home Wednesday morning.
"Last night, I heard a lot of fireworks, and I was up until about 4 because there was so much going on," said neighbor Cynthia Echevarria. "But it didn't dawn on me that it could be any kind of gunshots."
Echevarria said Gallardo seemed like a good father, and she could not understand what took place.
Gallardo's wife was not at the home, and it was reported the couple was going through a divorce.
"Not a way to start New Year, for sure," said Brad Haltom. "But prayers go out to the family and hope they can get through this."
Shortly after 6 p.m. Wednesday, detectives executed a search warrant at the house and began the investigation. Officials from the Maricopa County Medical Examiner's Office arrived at the same time to remove the bodies.
