PD: Teen who walked into McDonald's for help shot self

Posted: Updated:

A 16-year-old boy who walked into a West Valley McDonald's restaurant for help with a gunshot wound actually shot himself, Surprise police said Friday morning.

The teen admitted he accidentally shot himself in the leg while putting a handgun in his waistband, Surprise police Sgt. Bert Anzini said.

Anzini said the boy originally gave police a false story about how he was shot, but admitted he lied to avoid arrest.

The boy walked into the fast-food restaurant at Greenway and Reems roads just after 4:30 p.m. Thursday and was taken to a hospital.

Anzini said the incident remains under investigation and that no criminal charges have been filed.

No other information was immediately available.
