Northampton DPW collects Christmas trees

Posted: Updated:

The holiday season is officially over.

That means families need to figure out what to do with their Christmas trees.

But for city residents, that answer is easy.

Saturday morning was the first of two days this month where the city's DPW will collect trees for free at Smith Vocational High School.

Residents used to take their trees to the Glendale Road landfill, but that facility closed last May.

On Saturday, they just had to deal with the bitter cold temperatures.

"Usually on the collections, there's a back-up," said Debra Laizer, of the Northampton DPW.  "When you get here, people are already waiting. This morning was not quite the same. It was only about 5 degrees.  It was a little chilly, but we did have about 15 people in the first half hour."

Residents will have one more chance for the free collection.

The DPW will be doing it again on Sat., Jan. 18, from 9 a.m. until noon at the high school.
