Great-grandmother found killed in Richmond

Posted: Updated:

A Richmond family is in disbelief after a great-grandmother in her 70s was found dead Sunday evening.

Police are now investigating Emma Cook's death as a homicide and say they have a person of interest in custody.

People were very emotional at the crime scene, an apartment complex in the 1900 block of Cedar Street in the Union Hill neighborhood. Family members say the victim's daughter found her dead in her apartment just before 5 p.m. Officers arrived on scene just 60 seconds after the 911 call came in.

Dozens of relatives and friends gathered, as officers investigated, mourning the loss of someone so well-loved in her community. Many knew Cook as "Miss Emma." Her family says she worked as a custodian at Richmond Public Schools for years.

"She was just a beautiful, intelligent person," said Destiny Cook, 16, one of Ms. Emma's many grandchildren. Family members say Cook had eight children.

Destiny says her grandmother's car had been missing since Friday.

"She didn't come to church today. So my aunt just made sure she was okay. And she wasn't," said Destiny through tears.

Cook's son-in-law says, Chester Ingram, says Cook was known by everyone for her caring nature.

"Everybody knows how beautiful, loving and caring she was," said Ingram.

"She would do anything for anybody. She would give anybody anything," said Alicia Rasin, who has been friends with Cook for decades.

"I just miss her already. I will always love my grandmother. She was just the best," continued Destiny.

Police aren't releasing many details, as the investigation is ongoing. Relatives say the suspect may be known to the family.

"It's just not understandable. I just can't believe it," exclaimed Ingram.
