Tips to keep your car moving this winter

Posted: Updated:

Timothy Andrew is probably one of the few people who welcomes Mother Nature's cold shoulder.

"The weather has been incredibly good for us, very difficult for people driving their cars," said Andrew.

As the owner of Tyre Trak Automotive in Springfield, he has seen an uptake in business since the beginning of the cold snap.

"Your entire car's engine system is stressed badly when it's cold," said Andrew.

To help relieve some of that stress for both you and your car, Andrew advises following these simple steps.

It all starts in the morning. With cold weather like this, it's crucially important to start your car first to give it time to warm up.

"You don't want to jump in, start it and drive. It's very bad for your cars operating system," explained Andrew.

Andrew also reminds drivers to check battery connections and battery life. A car battery typically lasts three to five years.

And also check your fluids like oil, anti-freeze and coolant.

It's not only important to remember your engine during the cold, but your tires as well.

"Snow tires are a major improvement over season tires. Especially newer versions that are designed to clean,  and they do an incredible job," said Andrew.

Don't forget about your tire pressure as well, it fluctuates with the temperatures.

Keep these steps in mind, and Andrew said you'll have a smoother ride this winter.

"You always want to make sure to winterize your car every year in New England," said Andrew.
