Springfield non-profit giving grants to downtown businesses

Posted: Updated:

A Springfield based non-profit is looking to help boost business in the downtown area.

Develop Springfield is giving out grants to businesses located on State and Main Streets in downtown Springfield.

Paige Thayer is the Director of Marketing and Communications for Develop Springfield. She said thousands of dollars are available.

"It's a $10,000 grant that businesses can be eligible for to make improvements to the appearance of the ground floor businesses."

The money comes from the non-profit's Corridor Storefront Program.

It was established back in 2009 and focuses on enhancing the visual appeal of downtown buildings while providing assistance to people who are looking to invest in them.

Something Thayer said is vital to bring in more foot traffic.

"I think for folks who are trying to do business downtown, it's important for businesses to look good and appealing to be inviting for people to want to do business there," explained Thayer.

The money will be used to make repairs to meet building code and safety standards.

A number of grants have already been awarded, the most recent being this building located at 1600 Main St.

It's owned by the New England Farmworkers' Council, but the space will be rented out by the Student Prince as the future site of their International Bier Garten.

The non-profit said it estimates that the project will bring more than $2 million annually in economic benefit to the community.

Thayer said there is an application process to go through in order to receive a grant.

"It does require a partial investment by the business owners to make these happen, but it can be a big difference to them to make a physical difference to their buildings," said Thayer.
