State treasurer candidate visits Western Massachusetts

Posted: Updated:

A candidate in the race for state treasurer paid Western Massachusetts a visit on Sunday afternoon.

State Rep. Tom Conroy met with supporters, including State Rep. Aaron Vega and Mayor Alex Morse.

Conroy, who is from Wayland, MA, is in his fourth term as a state representative.

He says his private sector experience in financial services, as well as a good understanding of a family's financial struggles, provides him with the background needed to excel at the job.

Conroy is opposed to casinos in the Bay State and told CBS 3 that it will be up to the state treasurer's office to make sure any lost lottery revenue from casinos does not affect local funding.

"Casino gambling may be cannibalizing some lottery revenues," said Conroy. "The $900 million lottery revenue each year goes back to cities and towns. If we have a lot of expanding gambling, if we have a casino in Springfield here, it's going to be taking away some of that municipal assistance to cities like Holyoke."

Conroy is running for the position currently held by Steve Grossman, who is now in the race for governor.
