Saturday's weather still impacting Western MA roads

Posted: Updated:

As 2014 has begun, our weather has taken us on a roller coaster ride.

We have dealt with everything from snow and freezing rain, to sub-zero temperatures, to Saturday's warmup to the 50s.

But the rain that came with those mild temperatures wreaked havoc for parts of the Pioneer Valley, and it could continue to do so as this week continues on.

By late Sunday morning, the water could be heard draining down Arnold Street. It was a much different scene than 12 hours earlier, when city police set up road blocks.

"This is the first time I remember them shutting it down," said Mark Rivest, who has lived on Arnold Street for the last fifteen years.

Rivest told CBS 3 that the road gets flooded every time there's a massive rainstorm.

Police said Saturday night's flood was two-feet deep at its worst.

"I lost a car seven years ago," said Rivest. "My wife was driving down the road and didn't realize how deep it was, and the motor blew on it. I guess it's something they can't fix. I don't know what the story is with that."

While Arnold Street was back to normal by morning, the same could not be said for Route 5 in West Springfield.

The tunnel underneath the North End Bridge rotary remained closed due to potholes.

Reports said at least 14 vehicles suffered damage on Saturday, leading to the shut down.

On Sunday, police told CBS 3 that they still do not know when it will reopen.

They said that hinges on how fast the department of transportation fixes the road.

While traffic was not too bad at the rotary on Sunday, police said that will change on Monday once people start hitting the road to head to work.
