A woman in Niantic said an outside adventure turned into a nightmare for her pet cat.
Bridget Lowell said Wednesday that someone shot her feline Cheddar twice in the leg with a pellet gun.
"I mean full blood," Lowell said. "We panicked a little and took him right to the vet and the vet said 'no it's a gunshot wound.'"
Cheddar had two fragments removed by the vet and is recovering at home with a cast on his leg.
"It breaks my heart because how could someone be mean to a defenseless animal?" asked Lowell. "If you don't want our cat in the yard, then tell us. You don't need to be cruel to the animal."
Lowell believes the cat was shot in her neighborhood between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m.
"He doesn't go very far," explained Lowell. "He goes to the bus stop with the kids in the morning."
Lowell said Cheddar is both an indoor and outdoor cat. Since the injury, she's limited his time outdoors until whoever pulled the trigger is found.
"To have somebody do this for some reason that I couldn't tell you just saddened us," she told Eyewitness News.
The Animal Control Department in Niantic is asking anyone with information to give them a call.
