Phone scammers target utility customers

Posted: Updated:

National Grid has warned New England customers of its most recent utility bill payment scam.

Fraudulent callers who claimed to be from National contacted customers and threatened them with immediate service shut-off unless the victims provided credit card or bank account information.

The calls originated from a 617 / Boston area code. There have been numerous reports of this type of scam in several states in the past year.

According to a news release from National Grid, the company has contacted customers with past due balances by phone to provide payment options, but it has not demanded direct payment over the telephone.

Any customers who have received fraudulent calls should contact National Grid at 1-800-322-3223.
