Rex Sox World Series trophy makes appearance at local school

Posted: Updated:

The Boston Red Sox paid tribute to Jackie Robinson and showed off their 2013 World Series trophy at Springfield's Van Sickle Middle school Friday morning.

The Red Sox have celebrated Robinson's life by teaching students the story of his challenges and accomplishments.

Congressman Richard Neal, Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno, Superintendent Daniel Warwick, Red Sox Hall-of-Famer Tommy Harper, award-winning raconteur Dick Flavin, and several Red Sox club officials attended the event.

The annual event was an inspiration for Neal's effort to present legislation to posthumously honor Robinson with the Congressional Gold Medal. That ceremony took place in March, 2005, in the Rotunda of the Capitol with the President George W. Bush, Red Sox officials and Robinson's widow, Rachel.

"We are just thrilled that the Congressman and the Boston Red Sox are bringing this wonderful program into one of our schools this year," said Warwick, adding that the event had historically taken place at schools in Eastern Massachusetts. "I think it's a great history lesson for our students and we are all so excited."
