BBB cell phone scam alert

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

For those who get a single ring on their cell phone, but do not recognize the number, may want to think twice about dialing it back – it could cost them some extra cash.

The Better Business Bureau is warning the public about a new ‘one ring' phone scam.  BBB recommends researching the area code before calling it back.

Scammers are using auto dialers to call thousands of cell phones in hopes curious consumers will call it back, according to the BBB.  Those who do call the number back, without knowing who the number belongs to could have an additional $30 charged to their phone bill; $20 up front and $9 for each additional minute.

It's called the ‘one ring' phone scam because the scammers only let the phone ring once.

Here are a few of the area codes to look out for – 268, 473, 809, 876, 284.
