AUBURN, AL (WBRC) -
The year's biggest in-state recruiting battle went to down to the wire. In the end, Rashaan Evans shocked almost everyone and picked Alabama over Auburn.
Evans played linebacker in Gus Malzahn's backyard at Auburn High School. His father, Alan Evans, played at Auburn for a short time.
Most people believed Rashaan would play his college ball right down the road with the Tigers. The recruiting battle even took an unusual turn on Saturday night as both coaching staffs showed up at Rashaan's grandfather's 80th birthday party.
When it came time to make a decision, Evans seemed more intrigued by the chance to play the jack linebacker in Nick Saban's system. Malzahn was pitching Evans to be a hybrid linebacker/safety.
Evans is also good friends with Alabama linebacker Reuben Foster and he says that friendship played a big part in his decision.
So for the second year in a row Alabama has nabbed a highly rated prospect out of Auburn's backyard.
