Emergency officials: Be prepared before snow, ice system hits

Posted: Updated:

Emergency officials in South Carolina are preparing for a winter storm that could bring snow and ice into the Palmetto state.

According to the Lancaster County Emergency Management Director Morris Russell, an emergency shelter is available for anyone who loses power or heat during this event.

"The uncertainty of the weather forecast makes it very important for everyone to closely monitor the changing conditions.  The forecast includes the likelihood of snow/ice accumulation.  These conditions create a potential for extended power outages and loss of heat." Russell said.

"In addition, citizens need to make preparations to combat the potential issues that could arise because of these conditions."

Emergency officials say to make sure you have sufficient heating fuel before the storm hits.

To avoid freezing pipes, allow faucets to drip a little during cold weather. Running water, even at a trickle, helps prevent pipes from freezing.

Officials also recommend that people check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors before the system hits.

"House fires pose an additional risk, as more people turn to alternate heating sources without taking the necessary safety precautions," officials told WBTV. "A space heater should be plugged into a wall outlet instead of an extension cord.  Follow manufacturer's guidelines for proper clearance around any heat sources."

Anyone who loses power or heat during this storm should contact Public Safety Communication at (803) 283-4136 for directions to the shelter.  The Emergency Management Office will continue to evaluate the need of shelter throughout the duration of this storm.
