Police: Henrico missing man's car found burned in Powhatan

Posted: Updated:

Henrico police are looking for a 24-year-old man who was last seen leaving his West End home. The charred remains of his car were recovered the following day 20 miles away in Powhatan.

Jaime Cruz-Avila was reported missing by a friend he lives with on Thursday. That same day Henrico police say they got a call from the Powhatan Sheriff's Office.

"They said they had found a car that had been burned," said Henrico police spokeswoman Lt. Linda Toney. "It was registered to and had been driven by Jaime Cruz-Avila."

The car was found on a boat ramp at Watkins Landing in Powhatan. Watkins Landing is about a mile and a half off Route 711, or Huguenot Trial. It's fairly secluded and quiet, said residents in the area.

According to Henrico police, investigators have gathered evidence at both locations. That evidence leads them to believe that Cruz-Avila is in danger.

Police wouldn't elaborate on what evidence was collected or if Cruz-Avila was seen leaving his home with anyone.

Cruz-Avila lives in the 2500-block of Dickens Glen Court. The homeowner said Cruz-Avila was staying there, but they weren't related. He didn't want to comment further.

There was shattered glass on the pavement in front of the home consistent with a car window or windshield.

Henrico police are asking anyone who may have seen Jaime Cruz-Avila to call the Henrico Police Department at (804) 501-1000 or Crime Stoppers at (804) 780-1000.
