A caseworker for the state's Child Protective Services was released from jail after Phoenix police said she tried to buy heroin from an undercover detective while on the clock.
Phoenix Police Department Sgt. Trent Crump said Leyla Sadikovic, 35, made attempts throughout the day Thursday to get narcotics.
A Phoenix police officer's statement said police first became involved about 7:30 a.m. after Sadikovic allegedly contacted a client whose case she was in charge of and asked if that person knew where she could purchase oxycodone or heroin.
The client contacted police out of concern for the safety of her children and those of other parents whose cases might be in the charge of Sadikovic, according to the statement.
Through a series of text messages, detectives arranged a 6 p.m. meeting with Sadikovic to buy $200 in heroin, according to the statement.
Sadikovic then drove a government-issued vehicle to the arranged site to buy the drug, which was actually a piece of candy wrapped in foil.
She was arrested by the undercover detective she believed to be the supplier.
She told police she was buying the drug as part of her CPS duties to investigate her clients.
Crump said CPS's Internal Affairs Division has been working closely with investigators.
Division of Child Safety and Family Services spokeswoman Jennifer Bowser-Richards said Sadikovic has been fired effective Friday.
Bowser-Richards said the department takes the allegations very seriously and is doing an internal investigation to review Sadikovic's current cases as well as cases she may have been involved with in the past. Sadikovic was hired by CPS on Jan. 22, 2013, Bowser-Richards said.
Sadikovic was booked into jail on one count of attempted possession of a narcotic drug.
She pleaded not guilty Friday morning during a brief court appearance and was released without bond to await trial.
Her defense attorney, Michael Ziton, said Sadikovic had no criminal history and that the arrest was "an isolated situation."
Her next court appearance is scheduled for March 10 in Mesa.
