Springfield gears up for MAAC Basketball Championship

Posted: Updated:

March is right around the corner, which means the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Basketball Championship will once again be rolling into town.

On Wednesday afternoon, representatives from the Greater Springfield Convention and Visitors Bureau and the MassMutual Center hosted a MAAC Championship pep rally at Champions Pub in Springfield.

The tournament kicks off March 6 and runs through March 10 at the MassMutual Center.

Eleven teams from across the Northeast will compete.

"We're going to be bringing very high quality Division 1 men's and women's basketball here to Springfield, so we're really excited to be a part of that," said Matt Hollander, general manager for the MassMutual Center.

Michael Harwitz, the chairman of the Springfield Convention and Visitors Bureau, said the events won't only be contained to the MassMutual Center.

"Between the hotels, restaurants and MassMutal Center, there will be events all over the place. The Fan Fest will be going on and a lot of things for the kids," explained Harwitz.

Organizers said they expect to host more than 15,000 fans and players throughout the four-day event.
