Amherst residents circulate petition to nearly double minimum wage

Posted: Updated:

Amherst town officials are considering a proposal to increase the minimum wage for town employees to $15 per hour.

The Amherst Select Board was presented with a petition signed by 200 registered town voters who are pushing for the wage hike.

As required by town law, officials have set a special town meeting for March 19 to discuss the measure.

Town officials expect a healthy debate among its residents that night.

"I would imagine that a discussion of an increase of that magnitude, the current state minimum wage is $8 an hour, so this would double that in on fell swoop. I'm sure people will have opinions about that pro and con," said Town Manager John Musante.

The town has not yet taken a stance on the proposal.

Select board members will discuss the matter for the first time two days before the special town meeting.
