Exploding target rocks neighbors in Hanover

Posted: Updated:

Residents in the Black Creek area of Hanover County got rattled Sunday afternoon, after reporting an unusually loud boom.

Fire officials say someone fired an exploding target, which can be bought over-the-counter. Exploding targets are legal, and can be bought at sporting goods or gun shops. Exploding targets make a loud burst after getting shot with a high powered gun. Officials say no charges were pressed against the neighbor who shot the target, since the product is lawful.

However, the sound of the exploding target off Black Creek Drive literally rocked the blocks surrounding the blast. It also drove police and fire crews to respond to the reports of an "unknown explosion."

"This tremendous boom went off. I've never heard a noise as loud as that… shook the house and rattled the windows," described Gwen Townsend of the blast.

Townsend lives next door to the residence in which the exploding target was fired off. She says at least two dozen neighbors gathered around her home after the loud explosion.

"I immediately called 911 because I thought a house had blown up or there was an earthquake...I think it'll be good when (the story) comes on channel 12 (so) people know what the explosion was," continued Townsend.

"It was almost like a plane had crashed," said another neighbor, Betty Barnette.

Another neighbor, who asked us to keep his name concealed, told NBC12 that he and his son were fishing nearby, and are now both experiencing hearing problems.

NBC12 just reported on a series of exploding target blasts in Chesterfield, which had area residents questioning the noise for weeks.

Townsend just hopes this is the last blast. "So much havoc and chaos for so many people."

Neighbors say they're planning to take their concerns to the county board of supervisors.

The man who shot off the exploding target sheriff's deputies he didn't wish to comment.
