Spartanburg police said they were able to track a man who fled from a local grocery store on a bicycle after he stole steaks at knifepoint.
Police were called to the Food Lion on Garner Road Sunday after an employee tried to stop the suspect who was stealing food.
When he was stopped, the man said he had paid for the meat but could not find his receipt, according to the police report. The report stated the suspect said "Call the cops because I paid for the meat 30 minutes ago, I'm not a thief."
But then police said he pulled a knife, waving it at the employee then left the scene on a bike.
According to surveillance video and talking to others, they saw the man enter the store then pull out the shopping bags, placing the several packs of steaks inside before trying to leave without paying.
Officers were able to set up a perimeter and track the suspect through the woods to the north side of town where they found him, police said. The report stated they found him with two Food Lion bags holding six packs of steaks all inside his backpack.
James Hopkins, 58, was arrested and charged with armed robbery, police said.
According to the report, Hopkins comes to the store fairly often, sometimes daily.
