Great River Bridge in Westfield reopened, gas crews remain on-scene

Posted: Updated:

Westfield emergency crews are investigating a gas leak near the Great River Bridge Monday night.

Police told CBS 3 a leak was detected and firefighters are trying to locate it.

The southbound bridge, or the bridge that brings traffic into town on North Elm Street, had been detoured by police but is now back open to traffic.

There is no word on the severity of the leak. Residents told CBS 3 there is a strong smell of gas in the air.

Officials are telling our crew on-scene that fire and gas crews are searching an abandoned antique shop on Elm Street. Police say when they arrived, the gas meter there was spinning out of control but gas should not be on in that building.

CBS 3 will continue to update this developing story as more information becomes available.
