PHOENIX (CBS5) -
Phoenix police said the gun waved by a suspected carjacker was a pellet gun that even his accomplice thought was real before he was shot and killed by a police officer in downtown Phoenix on Tuesday.
Phoenix police Sgt. Trent Crump said the gun 26-year-old Craig Uran was waving at police during a chase that started in northwest Phoenix was actually an air-gun that resembled a handgun.
Meanwhile, the woman riding with Uran, 23-year-old Jessica Hicks, was booked into jail on charges of first-degree murder and armed robbery in connection with Uran's death.
A records check showed Uran was a convicted felon with a violent criminal past that included felony convictions for theft of transportation, a drive-by shooting and misconduct involving a weapon.
He posted an $1,800 bond Nov. 6 in a case in which he was accused of being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm.
Police, using unmarked cars and a helicopter, had been following the pair in a stolen pickup truck from Interstate 17 and Dunlap Avenue in northwest Phoenix, Crump said.
The chase led to a parking garage at the CityScape area near Jefferson Street and First Avenue in the heart of the city's downtown, Crump said.
Once inside the underground garage, the pair abandoned the stolen vehicle and then took a 2011 Ford Escape SUV belonging to Vicky Lopez at gunpoint, Crump said.
Lopez, an attorney with The Nolan Law Firm based in Mesa, was not injured.
With Uran behind the wheel, the pair tried to leave the garage, and were rammed by an armored vehicle and two police cruisers, pinning the stolen SUV against a Subway sandwich shop before the man was killed by a single shot from a Phoenix police special assignment officer just before 11 a.m.
A police officer suffered an injured leg when he was run over by a police department Bobcat vehicle as he was kneeling near his patrol car with his firearm aimed at Uran, Crump said. He was taken to a hospital, where he was treated and released, Crump said.
Police officers said that while they were following Uran and Hicks in northwest Phoenix, Uran began waving the gun at officers, Crump said.
They took Hicks into custody moments later and booked her into jail on suspicion of first-degree murder and armed robbery.
According to state law, authorities can seek a first-degree murder charge against a person involved in a violent felony crime if anyone is killed during the crime.
Central Avenue and Jefferson Street were closed, and light rail was stopped in the immediate area.
It was the 13th officer-involved shooting in the Valley since Jan. 1.
No other information was immediately available.
