Man tackled by police after pursuit of stolen semi on I-64 identified

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A multi-county pursuit of a stolen tractor trailer cab ended shortly before 4 p.m. Friday on westbound Interstate 64 near Blankenbaker Parkway when the driver stopped the vehicle, jumped out and ran before numerous law enforcement officers tackled him.

Police say the semi cab was stolen Thursday night from a farm behind Oxmoor Center. Around  2:55 p.m. Friday, the vehicle's owner spotted the stolen cab and called police while following it.

After police joined the pursuit, investigators said, the driver of the stolen vehicle, who was identified as Erik Atwell, 44, led them down the Watterson Expressway, Interstate 71 and finally I-64, heading east toward Shelby County. He then exited at Simpsonville, cross over I-64 and got back on the interstate heading west.

Atwell was stopped about a quarter-mile east of the Blankenbaker Parkway exit. He got out of the vehicle and ran a short distance before numerous officers tackled him and placed him in custody.

He was taken to a hospital to be checked out before he was booked into Louisville Metro Department of Corrections. 

Atwell is charged with receiving stolen property over $10,000, fleeing or evading police, assault of a police officer, operating on a suspended or revoked operator's license, wanton endangerment and resisting arrest.

He is scheduled be arraigned Saturday at 9 a.m.
