A Florida mother was arrested after police said her 3-year-old son was found wandering the streets in West Haven Thursday morning.
Police received emergency calls about a toddler found in the area of Greta and Highland streets around 8:30 a.m. The toddler was wearing a diaper and holding a blanket.
Officers were able to locate the child and put the boy into their cruiser as they searched for his parents.
As a precaution, firefighters met up with the officers to examine the toddler. Police did not say if the child had any injuries.
Police located the boy's mother, who was identified as 30-year-old April Pardy, sleeping in the nearby hotel room.
Officers found three other small children, who were all under the age of 12, in the hotel room, which was in "deplorable condition with trash, old food, dirty diapers, a ferret and a dog."
Police have been unable to determine how long the family was living in the "deplorable conditions."
All four children were turned over to officials with the Connecticut Department of Children and Families.
Pardy was charged with risk of injury to a minor and allowing unsupervised children under the age of 12 in a public place. She is being held on bond and expected to be arraigned at Milford Superior Court on April 8.
