A couple in Woolmarket is facing something that no parent ever wants to face. Their son was born with a rare condition that has called for not one, but three open heart surgeries. Now, Jason and Megan Berry are seeing the benefit of community support.
The Berry's insisted to doctors that their newborn son, Landon, was suffering.
"I kept hoping I was wrong. I just knew in the back of my mind that something was not right," said Megan.
Tests were finally run, and the doctor came back with news that their baby boy was born with an extremely rare condition; Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome.
At just over a month old, he's already had one open heart surgery with more expected in his future. The Berry's are counting on the support of loved ones to get them through these tough times.
"We've definitely been blessed with the friends and family we have," said Jason.
To help the young family out, friends and relatives decided to host a benefit fish fry at St. Mary Catholic Church in Woolmarket.
"There's no words for it. You just don't realize the love that people have for one another until something like this happens," said Megan.
"Yeah, it's been very emotional. You know, the prayers, the support," Jason agreed.
Megan's sister, Brooke Rushing, helped organize the benefit. She said that the response from the community means so much to her sister and her husband.
"It was overwhelming, and it was very heartfelt," said Rushing.
The fish plates weren't the only items available to benefit baby Landon and his family. There were also desserts, T-shirts and raffle tickets for sale with all proceeds going to the family.
Rushing said that no matter what, her family has a tendency to stick together through thick and thin.
"You can get through it; we're going to get through it. He will be fine, he doesn't have a choice," said Rushing.
The benefit raised $6,585 for the Berry family. If you are interested in helping the family out, there's still time to donate. You can simply make a deposit to Keesler Federal Credit Union in Megan Berry's name.
