A former Aloha High School teacher is guilty of sex abuse involving a former student.
Eric Wise, 37, pleaded guilty in court Tuesday to the charges of second-degree sex abuse and furnishing alcohol to a minor. An additional charge of third-degree sex abuse was dismissed as part of his plea agreement.
Wise was arrested in January. Deputies said they were tipped off about an inappropriate sexual relationship between Wise and a former student, who was 17 years old at the time.
Wise had been employed by the Beaverton School District since 2006, most recently teaching marketing and business at Aloha High School.
He also coached for the Lake Oswego Soccer Club and Crossfire Oregon Soccer Club, including coaching a team of girls. He resigned on Jan. 9 and did not offer an explanation, the board president told Fox 12 at the time of his arrest.
Wise had been the victim's teacher for several years. Investigators said the abuse happened over a six-month period after she graduated.
In court Tuesday, Wise apologized for his actions, saying what he did was "extremely wrong." However, he claimed there was no "grooming" going on. He also said he did not intend to give the teen girl alcohol.
"It was in my fridge that she accessed," he said. "I did not buy it for her."
Wise also said he knows he didn't just tarnish himself, but the teaching profession.
He then added about his time with the victim, "but, as my attorney said, it was mutual."
The judge said she was troubled by some of Wise's statements.
"She was not in a position to consent," the judge said.
"Even as you speak to me, you distance yourself from responsibility for your conduct," the judge added. "Like, somehow the child goes and gets a Mike's Hard Lemonade out of your refrigerator, but you didn't buy it for her. What difference does that make?"
"I just don't understand what you're saying," the judge said.
The judge added that Wise was punished professionally by surrendering his teaching license.
In court, he was sentenced to two months in jail and five years probation. He also must register as a sex offender and have no contact with the victim or any girls between 11 and 17 years of age.
