Essential oils are widely used in homeopathy to treat all kinds of ailments in people. Now, many animal lovers are finding they help restore their pet's health as well.
The Whittington family isn't complete without Myles and Jewels.
"My dogs are my second family. They actually came first before the kids, so they're my first born," said Tracy Whittington.
So when Myles got sick, Whittington got worried.
"He got valley fever when he was 7. A severe case that settled down in his spine which caused a lot of the arthritis and pain that he has in his spine and hips. He just one day couldn't move he couldn't get up. He just cried and his cry lingered for like 30 seconds," said Whittington.
Whittington sought several different kinds of treatments for Myles and said he got better but was never the same.
Then Whittington started using an essential oil called lemongrass.
"In January I started putting one drop on his ears, once a day, and within two weeks he could jump into the car. Nothing else changed. Yes, he was on herbs, yes, he had had different kinds of treatments, but nothing changed the fact that he couldn't jump in the car or get into the bed anymore," said Whittington.
But veterinarians say you need to be very careful when using essential oils on animals and use them only under the guidance of a trained professional.
"It's extremely, extremely important to be safe when using essential oils on your pets. Dogs and cats are not small humans. They do metabolize things differently," veterinarian Marjorie Nard said.
Nard says essential oils are applied differently on animals than on humans. She also says choosing the right brand is essential.
"I would never apply it on the feet and I would never use anything other than good quality, medical-grade essential oils, and probably most of the time do a dilution," said Nard.
Whittington uses Young Living medical-grade essential oils, and she says they've made all the difference.
"It makes me a proud parent. It makes me realize I'm able to give my dog a better life without the side effects of medication," said Whittington.
