BOILING SPRING LAKES, NC (WECT) - A Brunswick county man has been cited with two counts of animal cruelty for allegedly beating and killing two mallard ducks with a 2x4 wooden board.
According to Cpl. Bobby Britt with the Boiling Spring Lakes Police Department, officers received a phone call about a man carrying a dead duck by the neck last Thursday afternoon at 1066 Bayside Lane in Boiling Spring Lakes. Jerry Wolf was working in his back yard when he looked across the lake and saw the ghastly image.
"All of a sudden, he picked him up by the neck and you could tell it was obviously dead," said Wolf. "We were upset. It was a shame for someone to hurt and kill an animal that can't fight back."
When officers arrived to the house, they say Kevin Domas admitted to killing two ducks and officers found them buried in the backyard.
According to investigators, Domas told police that he was trying to protect his own "pet duck" from bullying at the hands of the other two ducks.
Officers with the State Fish and Wildlife service helped with the investigation, but later determined that it was up to the Boiling Spring Lakes Police Department to handle this case.
"After a good investigation, we got a citation so we have a day in court and we can handle it then," said Corporal Bobby Britt with the Boiling Spring Lakes Police Department.
Even a professional law enforcement officer like Britt can't help but feel emotional after working on an animal cruelty case like this.
"It doesn't matter if it's dogs or cats or birds or whatever," said Britt. "You hate to see animals get hurt. It does tug on your heart strings a little."
Domas was issued two citations for animal cruelty and is expected to be in court on June 16.
WECT.com tried to reach Domas by visiting his home but we were told Domas was not home. We left a number for him to call us back so he could defend his actions, but we have not heard back by the time of this report.
