This week is National Nurses' Week and Baystate Medical Center honored some of their own on Tuesday.
The hospital held their annual Nurses' Gala at the Baystate Health Education Center in Holyoke.
An awards ceremony was held to honor the achievements of all Baystate nurses over the past year.
One of the big awards given out was the Sharon A. Smith: Compassionate Caregiver Award.
Tuesday's recipient was Pamela Rivera who is a registered nurse in Baystate's Heart Failure Unit.
"It's really truly an honor because past recipients are some of my mentors and it leaves me speechless to know that I was nominated for it," said Rivera.
Rivera said she accepts the award on behalf of her fellow colleagues who work hard to give the best care possible to patients.
"What I like to say is everyday is special to nursing. Even though we have this week to celebrate and really be recognized, everyday is just a gift that we have to be able to work with our patients, their families and to work amongst each other," said Rivera.
National Nurses' Week focuses attention on the nation's largest health care profession and the many ways America's 3.1 million registered nurses work to save lives.
