Willimansett Bridge construction resumes, will finish in summer 2015

It's been a long awaited opening for many Chicopee and Holyoke residents.

MassDOT officials have announced that it has brought a new contractor on board to resume work on the Willimansett Bridge connecting Chicopee and Holyoke.

Construction first began on the Willimansett Bridge in 2011 and it was actually supposed to open this month, but back in September the contractor told the state they were going bankrupt and could not continue working.

Now, a new company has been tapped to finish the job. Northern Construction Service is the company selected to continue the project.

They are a "heavy highway" construction company based out of Palmer. Work will begin work within the next several days to resume reconstruction of the bridge,

The company says double shifts will be done daily to expedite completion of the work.

MassDOT officials say the completion contract is expected to cost approximately $18 million. They say that bill will be paid for by outstanding funds in the original contract, the original contractor's bond company, and by MassDOT.

Now, MassDOT says the bridge is expect to be back up and running sometime in July 2015.
