TriMet bus driver: 'Wow, we got hit by the San Antonio Spurs'

Posted: Updated:

The San Antonio Spurs should have taken it as a bad sign ahead of their Game 4 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers at The Moda Center.

Even before they arrived at the arena, the Spurs' run of bad luck had started - their team bus collided with a TriMet bus as the two vehicles made a right turn on Sixth Avenue.

"I looked in the mirror and immediately saw the bus back there. And I was like 'Wow, we got hit by the Spurs,'" said TriMet bus driver Todd Bateman.

At the time, the Spurs were headed to The Moda Center to warm up for Game 4. Blazers fans on the TriMet bus started to boo the Spurs after the minor collision. No one was hurt.

Not only did the Spurs crash on their way to the arena, they crashed at the arena too, as the Blazers won 103-92 to cut San Antonio's series lead to 3-1.

"I couldn't help, but I feel like I had a hand in that - getting in their heads driving that bus out there," Bateman said.

It was Bateman's first accident with TriMet. He works security at The Moda Center, and despite the collision, he was still able to get off work just in time to attend the game.

"I could see people tweeting about it last night about maybe that's what helped win the game. Hopefully, it did, but I was just sitting there in traffic," he said.

This wasn't the first bizarre pre-game occurrence of the Blazers-Spurs series. In Game 2, the Blazers found a rattlesnake in their locker room in San Antonio.

Tip-off for game 5 is Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. The Blazers must win to stay alive in the NBA Playoffs.
