Eastern States Exposition brings in $479 million to the region

A new study is showing just how much money the Big E pulls into Western Massachusetts every year.

Millions of Massachusetts residents and visitors from out of state come to West Springfield every September for the Big E. The fairgrounds host many events throughout the year as well as the 17-day fair. Today, Eastern States President and CEO Gene Cassidy revealed a new study that shows the events at the West Springfield fairgrounds have a total year-round economic impact of $479 million.

"Every economic activity that takes place on the grounds of the fairgrounds is measured in this number. It's hotels, restaurants, gasoline purchases, products bought and sold has a dramatic impact on all of us," said Cassidy.

Unlike a previous study in 2008, Regional Economic Models Inc. looked at the many agricultural exhibitions and other events held throughout the year, drawing in a total of 2.5 million people to the area per year.

"There's so many things that happen on the grounds of Eastern States, most people are unaware of the events. We have over 120 other events that take place, many of them are agriculture related, many are things that don't attract a lot of attention to the public but they bring people to West Springfield and Springfield in large numbers," said Cassidy.

The Big E itself generates nearly 3,000 full time jobs and $85 million in personal income for Hampden County's economy.

"We act as a business incubator, and that's something I'm proud to be able to remark on," said Cassidy.

Cassidy said a study like this puts emphasis on the importance of Eastern states on the economy and residents of the region.
