Holyoke officer fires weapon during traffic stop

Posted: Updated:

An alleged member of the La Familia Gang is in custody Thursday night after a traffic stop in Holyoke led to an officer firing his weapon.

According to Police Chief James Neiswanger around 9:30, Holyoke police stopped an SUV at the intersection of Hamilton and South Bridge streets as the vehicle was suspected to be involved in an alleged home invasion.

Neiswanger said as officers approached the vehicle, something happened causing an officer to discharge his weapon once.

That officer has been identified as James Dunn, a 12-year veteran of the force.

No one was hit, and the bullet was lodged into the front right side of the Ford SUV.

Multiple law enforcement officials responded to the intersection and immediately closed it off to traffic as they investigated.

The driver of the vehicle Luis Gomez, 24, of Springfield was arrested on a charge of operating with a suspended license. Police said he has an extensive criminal history.

His passenger, who was not identified, was not arrested.

Neiswanger said both men are members of the La Familia gang.

No weapons were found inside the SUV.

Dunn's duty weapon was taken and he has been temporarily placed on administrative leave while the investigation is ongoing.

The Massachusetts State Police Ballistics Division has been contacted to investigate the damage to the vehicle.

Police are still conducting an investigation into the home invasion.
