Springfield students rewarded with bicycles

Posted: Updated:

The city and the Foundation for Life teamed up for a memorable summer kickoff on Saturday morning.

After treating 160 fourth-graders to a morning at the Basketball Hall of Fame, the kids were surprised to be taking home a new bicycle and helmet.

The children were selected by their schools based on their character and commitment to education.

Both organizers and families told CBS 3 that this was a morning they would not soon forget.

"I think it's wonderful," said Crystal Davis, whose daughter received a bike. "It's very nice, and I'm very proud of my daughter for working so hard this year. I think it's a great way to show her how hard, and it's good that she can see there's a reward for working hard."

"The look on the faces of the kids with their moms and dads, it's very heartwarming," said Mayor Domenic Sarno. "I had goose bumps when we did the morning presentation. The kids had no idea they were getting the bikes, so we had a full morning of stuff going on for them."

Through community support, organizers were able to more than triple their original goal of 50 bicycles.
